Age and Supervision

Skywood Climbing has a general minimum climbing age of 12. Children under 12 with previous or current climbing squad or team experience may be considered for an exception by management. Please contact us before attending to discuss this.

Children aged 12 and under must have a parent, guardian or responsible adult aged 18 or over present and supervising them while at Skywood. An exception allowing an experienced child under 12 to climb does not remove this supervision requirement, and children aged 12 and under cannot be left at the gym unattended.

The only exception is while a child is participating in a supervised Skywood program, where Skywood has expressly accepted responsibility for supervision for the duration of that session.

Young people aged 13 to 16 must have a parent, guardian or responsible adult present for their first visit. After that visit, future independent attendance may be discussed with the parent or guardian and considered by Skywood. In making that decision, we may consider the young person’s maturity, climbing experience, behaviour, familiarity with the gym and ability to follow safety rules and staff instructions.

Skywood may require adult supervision at any time where staff consider it appropriate.

All participants under 18 must have the required waiver completed by a parent or legal guardian before participating.

General staff oversight of the gym is not the same as individual supervision of a child. If the required supervision is not in place, the child cannot participate until an appropriate supervising adult is present.

Child Safety & Wellbeing

Skywood Climbing is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for children and young people. We follow the Child Safe Standards and have clear policies in place to protect the physical, emotional and cultural safety of every young climber who walks through our doors.

All staff and volunteers are trained in child safety, and we encourage open communication, active supervision, and reporting of any concerns. Our Child Safe Policy, Code of Conduct, Statement of Commitment, and Reporting Policy are available below for transparency.

If you see something, say something — safety is a shared responsibility.

House Rules

To keep everyone safe and the space welcoming, please follow these rules while at Skywood:

  • No running in the facility

  • Stay off the mats unless you're actively climbing or brushing holds

  • Notify staff immediately if there's blood on holds, mats, or floors so we can clean and disinfect properly

  • No personal items or dogs on the mats

  • Be aware of climbers above you when walking on the mats

  • Climbing shoes must be worn while on the wall

  • Don’t start a climb if it crosses paths with someone already climbing nearby

  • Empty your pockets before climbing

  • Remove all jewellery—especially watches, bracelets, and necklaces—before climbing

  • Never brush holds directly below another climber

  • Look out for one another—if you notice unsafe behaviour, speak up kindly

  • No unruly yelling or screaming

  • Children under 12 must remain under adult supervision while in the facility unless participating in a supervised Skywood program.

  • Please be considerate of our neighbours—keep noise to a minimum outside

  • Wear a shirt while climbing—it’s not that hot, promise!

Thanks for helping us keep Skywood safe, respectful and fun for everyone.

Lost Property

If you have left something behind we will hang onto it for as long as we can, but it is best to let us know if you have left it at the gym and we will make sure it stays safe! We encourage you to call or email us and we check what has been left behind and hopefully return your missing gear.
